The 2016 Chateau du Glana 'Pavillon du Glana' Saint-Julien is simply gorgeous! This estate is located right in the heart of the Left Bank commune of Saint-Julien immediately next door to Leoville Barton, two doors down from Leoville Las Cases, and across the street from Ducru-Beaucaillou.
This wine is actually the estate's second wine that is made from 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. The estate dates back to 1870 and the current owners purchased the original chateau in 1961. The bought several plots of vineyards that were part of the third growth Chateau Lagrange to grow the estate to some 43 hectares of vines grown on the signature gravelly soils that are so prized in this area. This second wine is aged 12 months with about 15% of the barrels new. The 2016 vintage was exceptional and this wine just sings with ripe summer cherry and currants, cedar and licorice and hints of coffee and toasted vanilla that polish this wine up and give it a sexy, silky texture that with a few years in the bottle is just starting to really show what its made of!! Long and pure and wonderfully clean this wine struck us all with its complexity and depth.
