VINEYARD DETAILS HMR Estate Vineyard | 1600 - 1735 feet Calcareous Limestone Soil
Adelaida has five organically-farmed vineyards in the coastal influenced Santa Lucia Mountain Range on the west side of the Paso Robles AVA. Situated on steep hillsides, these sites lie within the Adelaida District, a subappellation in the northwest corner of the wine region. With elevations ranging from 1400 - 2050 feet, limestone subsoils, and extreme diurnal temperature swings, averaging 45 degrees, Adelaida produces wines with distinct expressions of their site. Compared to past vintages in the Adelaida District 2020 was slightly warmer and culminated in typical yields across most varieties; even as Adelaida received just 12.4 inches of rain during the 2019-2020 winter. Adelaida’s four acres of Chardonnay lies in a sheltered swale of the Santa Lucia Range, some 14 miles from the Pacific coast. These grapes were harvested in the cool of night, hand-sorted, whole cluster pressed, and fermented on indigenous yeast in mostly neutral oak. Barrel aged for 9 months, the wine was left undisturbed (apart from routine topping) on the yeast, adding a sense of brioche-like richness to the crispedged fruit. Characterized by its distinctive limestone-driven aromatics combined with new world citrus zest, the wine opens to a mid-palate of pearlike fruit richness, sea salt taffy roundness, and finishing with the persistence of underlying crushed stone. This is a superb vintage of our estate-grown Chardonnay.
