Adi Badenhorst is a central figure in the rise of Swartland, and this bottling demonstrates why the district has become so revered. The wine is named after the yellow-coloured granite rocks found in this vineyard, planted in 1966. The nose shows white fruit, flowers, herbs and a hint of flinty reduction, while the palate is pure, energetic and pithy. Super-detailed and super-elegant.
The 2019 The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc, whole-bunch-pressed straight into a small old oak foudre, has a resinous bouquet of beeswax and light Conference pear aromas. The aromatics just need a little egging on. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity; this is a more "neutral" take on the grape variety. Steely and reserved, a Chenin Blanc that will benefit from a year or two in bottle.
