The Freedom Hill vineyard is planted on ancient uplifted marine sedimentary soils; it’s somewhat sheltered from the Van Duzer winds, giving it a slightly warmer microclimate than nearby sites. Vines used for this cuvée range from ~10 to 30 years old.
12 months in French oak barrels (500 & 350 L) + 3 months finishing in stainless steel. Production is limited: ~425 cases produced.
Aromas of lime blossom, tangerine, yellow apple, lemon oil, chamomile, hazelnut. and wet stone. Added layers of spices, ginger, incense, and white smoke. There’s a salty / briny minerality in the finish, and a chalky or flinty texture lurking in its bones.
Good food matches: richer seafood (halibut, scallops), shellfish (oysters, scallops), poultry with creamy sauces, mushrooms, even dishes with saline or umami components (seaweed butter, shellfish broth).
The 2023 Chardonnay Freedom Hill Vineyard mixes nuances of ginger with crushed rocks, white smoke, incense and lemon oil. Silken and pliant, it envelops the palate with ripe orchard fruit. A cascade of inner florals arches across the senses, and an air of candied lime adds depth toward the close. Flinty and mineral intense, the 2023 finishes with contrasting sweet and sour tones while leaving a sensation of balanced structure. A fantastic rendition of Freedom Hill Chardonnay.
