The 2019 Torre de Ona 'Finca San Martin' Rioja Crianza comes from the folks at La Rioja Alta and if you like Spanish wines then that name is probably very familiar to you here at Meritage as this wine is one of our top-selling wines in any category.
Torre de Ona is owned and operated by the folks at La Rioja Alta who have been making wines at their estate in Rioja since the late 1880s! This stand-alone winery is located in the prestigious Rioja Alavesa region and this wine is made from 100% Tempranillo. Production of this wine is done in a brand new state-of-the-art winery that is totally dedicated to this individual estate. Grapes are hand-harvested and this gem was aged in a combination of American and French oak barrels for 16 months with about half of the barrels new across the board. The wine is a gorgeous purple/garnet color in the glass and the nose leaps out to greet you with heady aromas of red cherry, currants, and blackberries laced with an absolutely gorgeous array of savory spice and earth notes. Licorice and cinnamon play off of hints of orange rind and tobacco all laced with graphite and mineral notes. This wine has the perfect kiss of toasted vanilla to add a sweet and supple warmth to this gorgeous, fleshy core of delicious red fruits. The mouth-feel is smooth and richly structured, with plenty of ripe, silky tannins that carry wildly complex flavors and vivid fruit beautifully to a long, focused finish that is juicy and pure!
The 2019 Finca San Martín is pure Tempranillo from the younger vines on richer soils, the grapes not used for Martelo that deliver rounder and fruitier wines. It fermented in stainless steel for 14 days with a slow malolactic of 74 days and matured in 60% new American oak barrels and 40% second-use French oak barrels for 16 months. It's round and fruity, with juicy fruit, round tannins and a gentle mouthfeel.
