Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.
VINTAGE 1998 Already slowed by El Niño’s winter flooding, the growing season of 1998 extended into late October, promoting a very long ripening period for Opus One’s grapes. Supple and lush, the 1998 Opus One shows an opaque purple color and intense aromas of blackberries, vanilla, and roasted espresso and caramel. The wine offers a resilient middle body, with seamless texture and a long, persistent finish.

BARREL AGING 16 months in new French oak
The 1992 Opus One, a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot, offers a beautiful dark ruby/purple color, a big, spicy nose of cassis, lead pencil, and smoky oak, round, full-bodied, broad, fat flavors crammed with black fruits, soft tannin, low acidity, and a fleshy, full-bodied finish. This rich wine confirms just how fine these wines have become since the 1990 vintage." (06/95) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Tightly wound, with firm tannins. The core of meaty currant, anise, cedar and spice tasted awkward, but all the ingredients are there for greatness. I expect this wine may take longer than most Opuses to reach its peak.
