The brand new 2019 Hill Family 'The Barrel Blend' Napa Valley Red is a stunningly delicious feasting red made from grapes from the gorgeous vineyards farmed by the Hill Family and made at their winery on Atlas Peak. Our good friend and San Diego native Kyle Knox is a former pro surfer and currently owns a wine distributorship. He makes this wine in partnership with the Hill Family and year in and year out this wine just over-delivers in every way!
The Hill Family Estate is a family operation run by third-generation farmers. The Hill family has been growing grapes in Napa since the early '80s selling their fruit to some of the top wineries in the valley. In the early 2000's they decided to take a tiny portion of their best fruit and start to make wine under their own family label. Their winemaker is Alison Doran, who came on as winemaker for their inaugural 2001 vintage. Alison had been making the extraordinary wines at Lewis which brought her to the attention of owner Doug Hill. Hill Family takes a tiny portion of only the finest fruit they farm on a collection of vineyards across the valley to craft this gorgeous Red Blend.
The 2019 Hill Family 'The Barrel Blend' is made up of 41% Merlot, 13% Syrah, 12% Malbec, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Zinfandel, 9% Petit Sirah, 2% Pinot Noir, 2% Dolcetto and 2% Viognier that comes from the vineyards that they farm. The Merlot and Cabernet come from their Atlas Peak vineyards and there is plenty of structure and plush dark berry fruits laced with cedar and graphite in this part of the blend. The wine was aged in about 90% French oak with about 15% of the barrels being new to add a kiss of vanilla and polish to this stunner. Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petite Sirah add amazing hints of blueberry, raspberry, and cracked pepper layered with earth and brown spice notes that color this wine with a hint of the exotic...this wine is truly delicious and its texture is chocolaty and silky and this red really fires on all cylinders!
Blackberry, mushroom and walnut aromas follow through to a full body with layers of ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows lots of structure and length. Needs time to soften and open.
