Since vines are passed down through generations due to French inheritance laws, it's a good idea to follow families in Burgundy. The Gros family are royalty in this regard, since they began cultivating vines in Burgundy in the 1830s. Jean Gros brought fame to the family name in the 20th century, and his son Michel assisted him in winemaking in the 1970s, simultaneously creating his own label and procuring other vineyards to make wine under his own name. When Jean retired in 1995, his estate was divided among his three children, & Michel Gros inherited Grand Cru fruit to add to his holdings, and he's continued the family legacy of quality.
'Hautes Cotes de Nuits' is a regional appellation so, fruit can be sourced from around the Cotes de Nuits, but Michel's is from a single vineyard just west of Nuits St Georges itself. In the glow of the warm 2020 vintage, this site produced a wine of fresh, juicy red cherry, rose blossom, redwood spice, and youthful approachability. Considering that his village-level wines fetch over $100bt (if you can find them), this is serious value in red Burgundy!
