The 2023 Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau Macon-Villages 'Clos Saint Pancras is a beautiful Chardonnay grown on an east-facing slope of rocky limestone, high on the Montagne Clesse just outside the town of Vire. These vines are now over 30 years old. This tiny vineyard is farmed all organically with no chemical pesticides or herbicides using only horses! The husband and wife team of Frantz Chagnoleau and his wife Caroline Gon (winemaker at Héritiers du Comte Lafon) do everything by hand and this gem is stunningly pure and wonderfully racy with an underlying hint of creaminess and mouth-filling richness that makes this special white an incredible steal! Caroline is an incredible winemaker who worked at Newton Vineyards in Napa Valley before returning to France to work with Dominique Lafon as head winemaker for Héritiers du Comte Lafon. You can taste the influence of Lafon in these incredibly vivid wines and today's selection is just fabulous!! Pear and racy citrus meet with stony minerals and crisp apple notes. There is a hint of smoky matchstick reduction that ramps up the complexity and reminds you of the Lafon wines without a doubt. This wine is deeply complex and aging in larger French oak barrels gives this wine only the merest hint of toasted vanilla in the background that adds a perfect hint of savory spice to this gorgeous white!! This wine punches WAY ABOVE ITS PRICE in every way!
