This 2023 vintage of Les Esparriers from Crous St Martin is a bold and expressive Gigondas that speaks clearly of its rugged southern Rhône terroir. A blend dominated by Grenache, with supporting Syrah and Mourvèdre, it opens with a brooding nose of black raspberry, wild herbs, cracked pepper, and garrigue. On the palate, it's rich and structured yet impressively balanced — ripe dark fruit (think blackberry compote and black cherry) is layered with notes of dried thyme, leather, and a touch of smoky minerality.
The tannins are firm but polished, giving the wine a sense of gravitas without heaviness, and the finish is long, savory, and dusted with sweet spice. While delicious now with decanting, especially alongside grilled lamb or mushroom dishes, it has the bones and intensity to age gracefully over the next 8–10 years.
A quintessential Gigondas that delivers Rhône power with finesse.
"This wine radiates purity and finesse, but with an edge that commands attention. Aromas of fresh roses, Carpentras strawberries, red licorice, flaky salt, and crushed stone rise with confidence. The palate is liquid silk—focused, laced with rose and anchored by fine tannins and quiet power. There's a tension beneath its elegance that hints at something deeper. A captivating stunner. 95 points."
