The 2018 Antonio Vallana Boca opens with beautifully lifted aromatics of dried rose petal, crushed red cherry, and blood orange, layered with hints of wild strawberry, warm baking spice, and a subtle iron-tinged minerality that speaks to Boca’s volcanic soils. With a little air, savory notes of leather, dried herbs, and a touch of tobacco begin to emerge, adding complexity and depth.
On the palate, it strikes a lovely balance between structure and approachability. Bright acidity carries flavors of macerated cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, while fine-grained tannins provide classic Nebbiolo grip without overwhelming the fruit. The small addition of Vespolina adds a gentle peppery lift and aromatic spice that lingers on the finish. Elegant, savory, and persistent, the wine finishes with notes of dried rose, red currant, and earthy minerality, making it both food-friendly and compelling on its own with a bit of time in the glass.
Vallana's 2018 Boca is an old-school, super-classic wine. Firm tannins wrap around a core of macerated dark cherry, cinnamon, licorice, dried herbs and menthol. The 2018 needs a good decant. Readers will find a sturdy, virile Alto Piemonte red endowed with tons of character.
