The 2022 Antidoto Ribera del Duero Tinto comes from the higher elevation section of Ribera del Duero called Sonria. This area is slightly cooler than the rest of the region. There is also a large proportion of old vines here as the sandy soils covered with river stones have meant that phylloxera has not decimated the vines and own-rooted or ungrafted vines are quite common. The vines that go into this gorgeous wine are over 50 years old and create a rich, plush red balanced with juiciness and vibrancy. Exploding with vivid black cherry and blackberry fruits over dried strawberry and macerated plum, this wine is very dark in color yet wonderfully silky and seamless with hints of licorice and cedar giving wildly complex character on the palate. No new oak is used on this wine so the intensity and depth are all from the organically farmed Old Vine Tempranillo! No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used here and only native yeast is used for fermentation. Owner and winemaker Bertrand Sourdais is a Frenchman whose family is from the Loire Valley. He was drawn to this rather unknown part of the very famous Ribera del Duero because of the preponderance of old vines and the unique and elegant terroir that showcases a style that is not as heavy-handed as is the norm in the warmer parts of the Ribera.
The 2022 Antídoto is a Tempranillo from old vines in Soria, Ribera del Duero, and spent up to eight months in 600-liter oak barrels. Garnet in the glass with a purple sheen. The slightly reductive aromas feature blood, blackberry, violet and black cherry notes. The palate is dry and intense, with a reasonably structured profile softened by fine, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. This is a remarkable Soria red that leaves a lasting impression.
