Torre de Ona is owned and operated by the folks at La Rioja Alta who have been making wines at their estate in Rioja since the late 1880s! This stand-alone winery is located in the prestigious Rioja Alavesa region and this wine is made from 100% Tempranillo. Grapes are hand-harvested and this wine is aged in a combination of American and French oak barrels for 16 months with about half of the barrels new across the board. The wine is a gorgeous purple/garnet color in the glass and the nose leaps out to greet you with heady aromas of red cherry, currants, and blackberries laced with a gorgeous array of savory spice and earth notes. Licorice and cinnamon play off of hints of orange rind and tobacco all laced with graphite and mineral notes. This wine has the perfect kiss of toasted vanilla to add a sweet and supple warmth to this gorgeous, fleshy core of delicious red fruits. The mouth-feel is smooth and richly structured, with silky tannins that carry the wildly complex flavors and vivid fruit beautifully to a long, focused finish that is juicy and pure! The young and fruit-driven 2020 Finca San Martín is pure Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel and matured in new American (60%) and French (40%) oak barrels for 16 months. It's creamy and spicy, with ripe berry fruit, clean and modern, approachable and powerful with 14.5% alcohol, but it also has good freshness and acidity.
