Relic was born in 2001 with the mission to make world-class wines that have ultimate complexity, aromatics, nuance and personality from some of the best sites in Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. The story of Relic is the story of us: Mike Hirby and Schatzi Throckmorton. We were both working at Behrens & Hitchcock Winery. Without the Behrens/ Drinkward/ Hitchcock clan, it is hard to imagine Relic existing at all.
Artefact was born out of our intention to create a Napa Cabernet with depth and a unique voice. To this end, we have sought out Cabernet sources that are not typical, as the pioneering farmers of Napa once did, looking for unique terroirs and microclimates. The vineyard sources for this wine have varied since its inception in 2005, but Artefact found its home in vintage 2011 at Kenefick Ranch Vineyard in Calistoga on Pickett Road, where the volcanic soils are deep and extremely rocky. We continue to fine-tune our approach to this wine, assuring that the vintage and vineyard shine in each bottle. This wine is typically aged in 90-100% new French oak barrels for 20-21 months.
