The 2020 Peake Ranch 'Peake Ranch Vineyard' Syrah is made from selections from their estate vineyards. The winery is owned by John Wagner and his wife Gillian. John grew up in Ventura working in his family's lemon and avocado orchards and knew that after a career in finance, he wanted to return to agriculture. The Peake Ranch Estate now has over 50 acres planted. Current winemaker Wynne Sargeant worked several vintages with Paul Lato before taking over in 2019. This Syrah is dark, smoky, and wonderfully rich with mouth-filling spiced cherry and blueberry fruits with higher tone raspberry unfurling with time in the glass. A whole cacophony of exotic spice and smoked meats with singed herb and roasted earth tones will make your head spin and the entire wine is sexy and satin-smooth with a backbone of juicy freshness and ripe tannin. This is World-Class Syrah!
96+pts- I was able to taste two Syrahs. The 2020 Syrah Peake Ranch Vineyard offers a vivid purple/ruby hue to go with the fresh, elegant, pure style that's the hallmark of this estate. Blackberries, spring flowers, smoked game, and ground pepper are just some of the nuances here, and it's medium to full-bodied, has beautiful tannins, a straight, focused mouthfeel, and a great finish. It reminds me of a top Côte Rôtie from the northern end of the appellation. This beauty will evolve for 10-15 years.
Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2020 Syrah Peake Ranch Vineyard features blackcurrant, blueberry, bitter chocolate and coffee bean aromas. Full-bodied and powerful, the palate has rounded tannins and freshness and a pleasantly herbal finish. It feels very clean at this stage, but I would opt to drink it on the younger side for its youthful fruit. 194 cases produced. Drink Date: 2022 - 2027
Strong sagebrush aromas meet with baked strawberry and plush cherry on the nose of this bottling, which also shows a touch of gamy funk. The palate is intense with fresh yet dark strawberry and plum flavors, as incense and eucalyptus leaf elements add intrigue.
