Moya Meaker was founded in 2010 by David Curl, former owner of Bordeaux’s Château Gaby, who acquired a small farm named Habibi in Elgin, South Africa's coolest wine region. The winery is named after Curl’s mother-in-law, Moya Meaker, who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1959. Moya was much more than a beauty queen, she was a wife, mother, friend, and force of nature and known for her unfailing community support and finding beauty in overlooked places and joy in adversity. The winery seeks to imbibe this spirit into every bottle they make and share. Elgin is surrounded by mountains that help funnel in the cool Atlantic Ocean winds, making this region perfect for Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Jean Smit is the winemaking genius at Moya Meaker and brings a wealth of experience from working with some of the world's best winemakers. He has crafted Pinot Noir with DuMOL’s Andy Smith in Russian River Valley, completed harvests at Wither Hills in Marlborough, studied Syrah with Stéphane Ogier in Côte Rôtie, and spent time at Napa Valley’s Larkmead Vineyards. In South Africa, Smit worked with legends like Adi Badenhorst at Rustenberg and spent nearly a decade as Chief Winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof.
The 2022 Moya Meaker Pinot Noir is full of red and black cherry, blood orange, currant, blackberry pie, and the slightest touch of raspberry sherbert. As it opens up you find pink peppercorns, pencil shavings, and river rock. I find this wine to have the bright pop of fruit you love from California-style Pinots but also the tension of Willamette and the structure and minerality of Burgundy, all combined into one.
This is a tasty pinot showing aromas of mushrooms, cherry stones, strawberries and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, soft and juicy with creamy tannins. Drink now.
