The 2022 Montecappone Verdicchio jumped right out of the glass as an instant favorite.
Verdicchio has been described as arguably Italy's greatest native white grape variety by Vinous Media's Italian expert, Ian d'Agata. Grown mostly in the region of Marche, Verdicchio is particularly well-suited to the maritime climate and clay of the Castelli di Jesi region, located in the northern part of Marche.
Montecappone was founded in the late 1960s in Jesi, in the Ancona region of Marche, Italy. In 1997, the Bomprezzi-Mirizzi family bought the property and immediately began renovating and expanding the winery. They also decided to replant almost all of the vineyards. The property currently stretches over 54 hectares of vineyards and 12 hectares of olive groves scattered among the hills and castles of beautiful Jesi. They are the first winery in the Verdicchio area to vinify in stainless steel without the presence of oxygen, retaining a high level of fruit aromatics and bright, vibrant acidity in the finished wine.
This wine is extremely drinkable and super refreshing. You get hints of white peach and thyme on the nose, followed by zippy acid balanced with lemon curd, lime zest, almond, juicy ripe pear, and a touch of mandarin orange. Crisp river rock and fresh basil add a touch of minerality and savory herb to the wine. This is the ideal brunch wine. It will pair excellently with any type of quiche, savory tomato tarts, prosciutto and melon, elaborate cheese and charcuterie trays, fresh oysters, seafood, or cacio e pepe.
