The 2021 Louis Latour 'Grand Ardeche' Chardonnay is an incredible value. The wine is wonderfully complex and rich with a broad intensity buoyed up with a core of juicy acidity and a stony mineral vein that comes from limestone-rich soils. There is a perfect hint of creamy vanilla oak that adds polish and gives this wine a luxurious texture and character. The grapes come from the winery's vineyards in the cool Ardeche Valley located in the southeastern part of France in the foothills of the Alps. They first built a state-of-the-art facility there in 1986 solely for the production of these wines. All of the vineyards are under long-term contracts and Louis Latour does nearly all of the farming and harvesting themselves. One of the ways they can maintain such incredible quality is that all contracts with the growers are partnerships paid on acreage, so yields are kept at the same low levels they have in Burgundy which means the quality of the fruit is exceptional. The vineyards are all located at about 270 meters of altitude on limestone and clay soils that impart the perfect verve and minerality to this Chardonnay. The wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels made by Louis Latour's in-house cooperage. The last vintage we offered out had won the White Wine of the Year at the Sommeliers Choice Awards which should give you some idea of how well thought of this delicious wine is in the industry!
