Campania, in southern Italy, is one of the country’s most complex and age-worthy white-wine regions, shaped by a dramatic mix of volcanic activity, mountainous terrain, and inland continental influences. Unlike the hot coastal image often associated with the south, much of Campania’s finest vineyards lie at higher elevations in the interior, particularly in Irpinia, where cooler temperatures and large day–night shifts preserve acidity and aromatics. The soils here are a mosaic of limestone, clay, and volcanic ash, remnants of ancient eruptions from nearby volcanoes such as Vesuvius. This combination gives Campanian whites a distinctive profile: structured, mineral-driven, and capable of remarkable longevity, with Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina standing among Italy’s most distinctive indigenous varieties.
Laura De Vito’s Elle 2020 is a refined and expressive example of what this terroir can achieve, made entirely from Fiano di Avellino grown in the high-altitude vineyards of Lapio, one of the appellation’s most prized villages. Sourced from multiple vineyard sites with limestone and volcanic influences, the wine captures both the tension and depth typical of great Irpinian Fiano. The 2020 vintage shows layered aromas of orchard fruit, citrus peel, and nuts, with subtle smoky and mineral undertones. On the palate, Elle is textured and complex yet lifted by vibrant acidity, finishing long and savory. It is a wine that reflects Campania’s unique ability to produce whites of both power and elegance, and a compelling demonstration of how southern Italy can rival the world’s great cool-climate white-wine regions.
