This wine is made by Italian "Wunderkind" Diego Finocchi who purchased his estate called L'Erta di Radda in 2006. He has spent the last 18 years fully converting the estate to all organic farming: no chemical pesticides or fertilizers are used. An "erta" is a steep slope and the area of Radda is known for just that type of terroir, at about 1100 meters of elevation, the rocky vineyard sites that go into this wine make for incredible Sangiovese.
The 2020 L'Erta di Radda Chianti Classico is vibrant and juicy and shows the deft touch this winemaker has with producing stellar Sangiovese that can punch with the top Sangiovese in this historic region. Mouth-filling waves of red berry, sweet cherry pie, and layer upon layer of savory sage, floral perfume, spice, earth, tobacco, black currant, orange rind, and semi-sweet chocolate notes seem to expand with each swirl of the glass! Juicy, with a powerfully built frame of ripe yet elegant tannin, this beauty always competes with Brunello's depth and richness. In the new 2020 vintage, this wine is loaded with high-toned, and gorgeously juicy red fruits that make this wine an absolute joy. Due to the dry end of the growing season in 2020, Diego Finocchi shortened macerations by one week for a total of 20 days to avoid extracting bitter tannins. He also co-fermented with a higher percentage of Canaiolo Nero to smooth out the wine. Mocha and nutmeg progress to black cherry and raspberry, nuanced by earthy liquorice root and baked brick. The palate is racy, linear and tightly wound. Suede-like tannins provide a slender frame to the red currant and cranberry core. Lip-smacking steely acidity is sure to stimulate the appetite!
