The tale of Burgundy in 2020 is two-sided - poor weather conditions in the first half of the growing season affected flowering, leaving a severely reduced crop load. However, the grapes that did survive through flowering saw a sunny, warm Summer and Fall. This, along with the reduced yields, produced wines of bountiful fruit and rich complexity, even at the 'entry levels.' Joseph Drouhin, under the guidance of winemaker Veronique Drouhin, always seems to coax the best out of any vintage, and this bottling from organically grown grapes in the village of Rully is no exception! Located in the Cote Chalonnaise subregion of Burgundy, this Pinot Noir from Rully is a great example of plush Pinot from a ripe vintage!
Full of bright red cherry and strawberry fruit, this juicy wine has layers of earth and spice that bring us back to Burgundy - cinnamon and clove, with a little underbrush. Mouth-filling but light on the palate, it's a ripe Pinot that bridges the gap for us between France and California, with a snappy, refreshing finish. A wine that's flexible at the dinner table and easy to drink but has concentration and depth, too.
