Jean-Louis Chave considers that his white Hermitage should either be drunk in its youth, or mature, when it has emerged from its adolescent sulk. It has long been a favourite of mine, since a visit to the estate in the early 1980s, and this did not disappoint. It has aged beautifully, with layers of flavour and texture, a satisfying mouthfilling blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, with some honeyed spice and a note of maturity. Drinking beautifully now.
A 1,000-case blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, the profound 2000 Hermitage blanc boasts a terrific perfume of honeysuckle, white flowers, peaches, citrus, and minerals. Displaying an unctuous texture along with tremendous glycerin, richness, and depth, it will undoubtedly close down after a few years in the bottle, but for now, it is a spectacularly rich, multidimensional white Hermitage.
