J.M. Sélèque is a family-run grower-producer based in Pierry in the Côteaux Sud d’Épernay, just south of Épernay in Champagne. The estate traces its roots back to the 1920s, and under the direction of Jean-Marc Sélèque today, it has become one of the region’s most exciting artisanal houses, emphasizing meticulous vineyard work, sustainable farming, and site-focused wines. The “Quintette” bottling celebrates this philosophy by blending Chardonnay from five distinct terroirs — Vertus, Épernay, Pierry, Dizy, and Mardeuil — each contributing its own nuance to the final wine. Vineyard parcels range from old vines planted in the mid-20th century to younger plots, all planted on chalk-rich soils that define the expressive minerality of the cuvée. The base wines are vinified in oak barrels with an ongoing solera reserve component and aged extensively on lees before disgorgement, resulting in depth, harmony, and refined complexity.
In the glass, Quintette Chardonnay 5 Terroirs Extra Brut is pale straw with a fine, persistent mousse and a vibrant, energetic profile. Aromas and flavors mingle citrus zest, green apple, crisp orchard fruit, and white flowers with subtle brioche and chalky mineral notes that reflect its varied terroirs. The Extra Brut dosage — very low at about 2 g/L — keeps the finish clean and focused, allowing the wine’s natural acidity and textural richness to shine. On the palate it is both refreshing and nuanced, showing tension and precision alongside the creamy complexity that extended lees age brings. It’s a Champagne with both finesse and character, making it ideal for aperitif service or pairing with seafood, shellfish, and lighter dishes where its energy and minerality can truly sing.
