Illahe was founded in 1983 by Lowell and Pauline Ford. Located in the Mt. Pisgah, Polk County AVA, Illahe Vineyards is one of ten in this unique area—and they’re doing things a bit differently. Winemaker Brad is passionate about traditional winemaking methods. Beyond hand-picking the grapes, they also use horses to transport grapes to the winery, a hand-propelled basket press, and even a bicycle-powered pump to move wine from tank to barrel. The dedication here is serious!
The 2023 Illahe Pinot Noir Cuvée Miette is a delicate and expressive wine has a lovely balance of bright acidity, juicy red fruit, and subtle earthiness. Aromas of chocolate-covered cherries, strawberry jam, candied orange, and hints of rose petal and baking spice warmly greet you in the glass. On the palate, you’ll find similar flavors with touches of raspberry, whispers of clove, crushed walnut, and the faintest note of mint and damp forest floor. The tannins provide enough structure to this medium-bodied, easy-drinking wine, adding depth and complexity.
