The Ilha do Pico Açores Branco 2020 'Terras de Lava' comes from the 2nd largest island in the Azores, just off the coast of Portugal. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America, the Azores are made up of 9 islands. Pico Island contains a volcano with the highest elevation point in Portugal, and is where this amazing wine is grown! The island is covered in black basalt soil, and the vineyards are planted between rock corrals built around each vine to protect it from the harsh winds they often experience. The drawing on the label shows what these corrals look like and I can't imagine the amount of work that has to go into their vineyard management! The winegrowers on the island formed a co-op to make great wine with their limited resources and ensure everyone gets supported with the proceeds and can thrive on their little island. The result is a delicious wine indicative of this unique island, the epitome of supporting a small/local/family-run business, and perfect for our summer weather!
The wine is made up of a blend of native Portuguese white wine grapes including Arinto dos Açores, Fernão Pires, and Verdejo. This wine is bright and crisp with just enough weight in the middle to give you that perfect mouthfeel and leave you with a crisp and refreshing finish. The palate of this wine is full of juicy citrus, lemon rind, key lime, zingy lemon custard, orange blossom, and a perfect thread of minerality throughout. The finish leaves you with a touch of salinity that makes you want to come back for another sip.
