What is Special Club you may ask?
The Champagne region of France is home to nearly 20,000 growers. The large, globally recognized Champagne houses make up 87% of the Champagne imported into the US wine market, leaving very little room for the small, family run grower producers. The large Champagne houses have always been in the spotlight but times are changing! While we love the big champagne houses for their classic and timeless house styles, it's the small production Growers that are making unique Champagnes embracing the concept of terroir and truly reflective of where the fruit is being grown. The best part is that these wines are amazing high quality, delicious, and still very affordable compared to the big boys. Through the camaraderie of a small group of Grower Champagne producers, Special Club Champagne was born.
In 1971, a tiny group of small production Grower Champagne producers decided to band together under one commonality- a true dedication to producing Champagne of the highest-quality, genuinely representative of the terroir in which they are sourced. The small founding club, Club Trésors de Champagne (French for ‘Treasure Club’) has grown from 12 houses to 24 and sets out to showcase the very best vinifications that best represent their unique terroirs.
The wines of Special Club Champagne must:
-be produced from only the most notable vintage years
-be sourced from each grower’s own vineyard
-bottled and aged on estate
-must pass a rigorous panel of judges made up by members of Club
The bottles selected for Special Club Champagne are considered the tête de cuvée, or the top bottle out of the grower’s estate.
