The 2019 Fabio Motta 'Scudiere' Sangiovese Toscana is a muscular and fabulously plush red made from 100% Sangiovese. Although Bolgheri is most famous for its reds made from Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet and Merlot, this wine is crafted by Fabio to pay homage to his father who was at the forefront of bringing Sangiovese to this coastal area. This winery is just around the corner from Ornellaia and the truth is this wine is a stunning value in a neighborhood that routinely produces wines that cost well over $100bt. The hillside slope of clay and sand at a couple hundred feet of elevation makes for a gorgeously lifted and rich style of Sangiovese with a dusty, ripe, silky tannin structure that makes this a beautifully lifted red that surges with red berries and wild strawberry over darker plum and dark cherry fruits layered with shaved dark chocolate and tobacco notes. The farming is all done bio-dynamically with no chemical pesticides and the wine was made using only native yeasts.
In honor of his father-in-law, Michele Satta, who is credited for elevating Sangiovese in Bolgheri, Fabio Motto makes his own interpretation. His 2019 Sangiovese Lo Scudiere is redolent of dark fruit mixed with hints of scorched earth, cedar, spicy tobacco and dried rose. The effect is simple, and although you don't get the same vertical lift or complexity as you might expect from Sangiovese further inland, the richer soils of Bolgheri that were once home to fruit orchards can work with the finicky variety. That said, Sangiovese represents only one percent of the total planting in the appellation. This wine is made with 25% whole cluster and is aged in 30-hectoliter truncated cone vats for one year.
