Mount Etna is one of the most distinctive wine terroirs in the world, defined by its active volcanic soils, dramatic elevation, and constant climatic tension. Vineyards are planted on the slopes of the volcano at elevations ranging from 1,500 to over 3,000 feet, where warm Sicilian sun is tempered by cool mountain air and wide day-night temperature swings. The soils—formed from lava flows, ash, and basalt—are porous, mineral-rich, and low in organic matter, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. These conditions give Etna wines their signature traits: high natural acidity, precision, saline minerality, and a strong sense of place, often described as Burgundian in structure but unmistakably Mediterranean in character.
Idda Etna Bianco 2023 is a pure and compelling expression of this volcanic landscape. Made entirely from Carricante, Etna’s most important white grape, the wine captures the tension and energy of the mountain with remarkable clarity. The 2023 vintage shows bright citrus and orchard fruit layered with floral notes, crushed stone, and a subtle salty edge that speaks directly to Etna’s soils. On the palate, it is vibrant and focused, with racy acidity balanced by texture and depth, finishing long and mineral-driven. This wine reflects both the raw power of Mount Etna and the elegance possible from its high-altitude vineyards—a modern benchmark for Etna Bianco and a striking example of how terroir defines the wine in the glass.
