The 2021 Domaine des Escaravailles Rasteau 'Heritage 1924' comes from a family-run estate that is sustainably farmed. This particular wine comes from a gorgeous 100-year-old vineyard that was planted in 1924 (hence the name) and sits high on slopes of blue marl clay that helps retain moisture and give these gnarly old vines the water they need to produce vividly rich yet fresh wines of elegance and incredible depth. This is one special red that is a luminous, dark opaque ruby-purple in the glass. Aromas of spiced plum and red berry preserves that are laced with herbs de Provence, cracked pepper and lavender explode with dark raspberry and warm earth notes. This is a plush red that is intensely silky yet retains freshness. The name 'Escaravailles' comes from the Occitan word for beetle which was a nickname for the black-robed monks that owned and worked the estate as they looked like beetles on the hillside vineyards.
From the oldest Grenache vines of the estate (planted in 1924), the 2021 Rasteau Héritage 1924 reveals a semi-opaque ruby hue as well as a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, spring flowers, and Provençal spice. With a gorgeous sense of elegance, medium body, ripe tannins, and the pure, silky style of the vintage, it's a brilliant Rasteau that I suspect won't be the longest lived Rasteau ever, yet one that will put a smile on your face any time over the coming decade. If you get a chance, give this beauty a try.
