The Schmitt family has been making wine from their vineyards in Bergbieten in Alsace since the early 17th century and Roland started in the vineyards when he was just 14 years old! The soil out there is gravelly limestone, which provides perfect drainage during wet periods, reflects the sunlight well during cool, sunny weather, and remains moist in dry spells. A tragic car accident took Roland's life in 1993 and left his wife, Anne-Marie, in a coma. She recovered and took over the estate with their two young sons, vowing to continue the work she and her husband loved so dearly. Fast forward to now and the three still run the wildly successful estate and are proud to have their wines poured in the top restaurants (many with Michelin stars) all over Alsace.
The wine is the perfect balance of rich and bright! The nose is floral and elegant showing honeysuckle, blood orange peel, orange blossom, and crisp green apples. The palate has a lovely weight to it counterbalanced by the crisp, bright acidity that keeps this wine refreshing. Every sip presents a wonderful expression of granny smith apple, key lime, lemon curd, perfectly ripe Asian pears, and a delightful thread of crushed gravel minerality throughout.
