The 2020 Domaine Doreau Monthelie 'Vieilles Vignes' is a richly intense and fabulously complex red Burg that is silky and layered, loaded with black cherry, fresh raspberry, red plum, and savory notes of cola and licorice over smoky mineral and loamy forest floor notes. Ample yet gorgeously ripe tannin makes this one serious wine but everything is silky and smooth. This wine is mouth-filling and rich as these old vines really bring the power. The village of Monthelie lies between Volnay and Meursault in the Cote de Beaune. The Doreau family has been working in these vineyards since the late 1800's when Pierre Doreau came to this area to help replant the vineyards after phylloxera destroyed everything. He acquired the family's first plots and over the ensuing generations, this domain has grown. The grapes are all farmed sustainably with the winery gaining a Level 3 High Environmental Value Certification in 2019. This wine is all hand-harvested and there is just a tiny kiss of oak that compliments the power and grace that this Old Vines Pinot brings to the table!
