Don Richards “D.R.” Stephens, a lawyer and real estate visionary, founded the estate after cultivating a passion for fine wine while running a San Francisco steakhouse "The Cooperage". In 1996, Don and his wife Trish acquired a 35-acre property on Howell Mountain Road in Saint Helena and planted Cabernet Sauvignon, christening it Moose Valley Vineyard after Don’s affectionate nickname for his wife.
Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, son of Don and Trish, began working in Napa Valley wineries from 2001. The winemaking since 2010 has been helmed by Michael Hirby, who worked as a sommelier at the upscale Primitivo restaurant in Colorado Springs. His winemaking experience extends to Behrens Family Winery, Realm Cellars, Collateral Wines, Husic Vineyards, and Relic Wines.
D.R. Stephens Estate wines are known for their limited-production, site-driven style, frequently appearing on high-end restaurant lists and having strong support from collectors, including participation in the Premier Napa Valley charity auction.
