Although it's common to find Malbec as a one-grape show in Argentina, we're delighted by the balance brought by the interplay of grape in this blend. This 'Tinto' (which means, roughly, 'red wine' in Spanish) is 75% Malbec, 19% Bonarda, and 6% Petit Verdot. Malbec is the star of the show here, with its signature plum, mocha, dark earth and violet notes, and round mouthfeel. You may be asking yourself, "What the heck is Bonarda?", as the grape is rarely seen outside of Argentina. Known in other parts of the world as Charbono or Corbeau, this grape is not widely planted, but in Argentina it adds deep fuschia coloring, a punch of tart raspberry, cranberry, and boysenberry, and a plush texture to the blend. Petit Verdot adds inky intensity and gravelly tannin, all held together with a kiss of cinnamon and vanilla from French oak.

The 'DV' in the 'DV Tinto Historico' is one Don Domingo Vicente Catena, the father of Nicolas Catena and Grandfather of Laura Catena, who was famous in the 1930's for producing a bold red blend and selling much of it to the posh bistros of Buenos Aires. As an ode to his memory and his expertise in blending, Catena produces this wine with grapes sourced from several of their high-altitude estate vineyards from subregions within Mendoza. Catena is focused on sustainability and uses organic vineyard practices whenever possible, and because of that the fruit shines in this big blend. It's a wine with juicy ripeness, grippy balance, and approachability that also boasts a 94pt score.

James Suckling: 94 Points

An alluring array of ripe red-berry and plum aromas with a floral, violet-like edge and appealing oak influence, too. The palate has a very plush, open feel with medium body and a fresh, juicy finish. Poached red-berry finish. So charming. Discreetly brilliant blending at work here. A blend of malbec 75% bonarda 19% and petit verdot 6%.

Wine Advocate: 91 Points

The subtle, balanced and elegant 2019 DV Catena Tinto Histórico was produced with a blend of 75% Malbec, 19% Bonarda and 6% Petit Verdot, and each grape seems to contribute nicely to the blend, making it balanced, harmonious and complex and especially very likeable and drinkable. It has moderate alcohol, round tannins and a lively and fresh mouthfeel. 117,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.
