Winemaker Chris Peterson is on fire making world-class wine in Washington! You may know him as the celebrated winemaker at DeLille cellars, but Peterson has branched into other projects in the Yakima Valley, in particular a partnership in 2009 that birthed Avennia celllars. With a focus on singular and stellar vineyard sources with low-intervention practices that make terroir shine, the Avennia wines showcase the best that Washington has to offer in Cabernet and Syrah.

The 'Arnaut' is 100% Syrah, 100% from Boushey vineyard, widely regarded as one of the best sites for Syrah in Washington - and the United states, for that matter. This release is fresh but ready to drink, full of fresh blueberry, brisket pepper, bacon fat, and boysenberry, with muscular grip and supple tannins. Drinks like great Northern Rhone with the sunshine of a Yakima Valley Summer. It works as a winter warmer for braised meats, or open in a few months with the first sunny BBQ days of the year! A killer wine to share with your favorite wine lovers!

Jeb Dunnuck: 97 Points

The 2018 Syrah Arnaut Boushey Vineyard is all varietal and was 85% destemmed and aged 16 months in 15% new French oak. Offering a Hermitage-like meatiness as well as lots of black and blue fruits, full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, and beautiful violet, floral, and gamey aromas and flavors, it’s brilliant, concentrated red delivering notable ripeness as well as a plenty of underlying structure and tannins. Again, a comparison to a top Hermitage comes closest in comparison.

Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points

Coming from one of the state’s top Syrah vineyards, the aromas explode from the glass, with notes of iron, bacon, earth and whiffs of orange peel along with blue and black fruit. Dense, intense rich fruit and savory flavors follow, showing weight and volume. But it’s the exquisite balance that most impresses on this standout wine. Best after 2024. *Cellar Selection*

Decanter: 95 Points

Conveying a deep core, the wine combines smoked brisket and violet aromatics that mingle with blackberry compote and charcoal on this complex bouquet. The palate is deep, round and generous, taking on a silky mouthfeel. The flavour range is outstanding with Black Forest cake flavours woven together with damp earth, smoked BBQ beef ribs, and Kalamata olive, giving this a savoury edge.

James Suckling: 94 Points

A chewy, rich red with aromas of black fruit, cocoa, cloves, walnuts and smoked herbs. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Lush and concentrated with ripe layers of spiced dark fruit. Polished, flavorful finish. Try from 2022.

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

Polished and multilayered, with expressive rose petal, black raspberry, orange peel and pepper flavors that build richness on a lingering finish.

Vinous: 93 Points

Aromatic nose combines blackberry, violet and black pepper; darker than the Justine blend. Fine-grained, tightly wound, juicy and very concentrated yet smooth from the start. Highly concentrated dark berry, spice, pepper and violet flavors could benefit from another year or two to meld--or give this wine some time in a decanter. This structured but smooth Syrah finishes with firm-edged dusty tannins, subtle sweetness and excellent length.
