The 2018 Allegrini 'La Grola' Veronese IGT is fantastic! Allegrini is one of the top producers of Verona's most famous red wine, Amarone. Those powerful wines are made by drying the grapes on mats to concentrate the wines. However, the La Grola is different. Made from 90% Corvina grapes from a perfectly southeast facing hillside in the heart of Valpolicella, these grapes were harvested at the peak of ripeness and in 2018 the conditions were immaculate. 10% Oseleta rounds out the blend and the winery says this little known grape adds wildly exotic spice notes and lots of dark color and structure from its thick skins. As I mentioned these grapes are not dried so this richly intense red is BOTH full bodied and fresh as can be. The aromatics and layered spice and earth notes that play off the mouth-filling core of dark wild berry fruit is impossible to resist, so if some of that comes from the Oseleta than I am glad its in there!! This big-dog wine was aged for 16 months in French Oak to polish this into a truly world-class red..."Super Veronese" indeed! Aromas of blackberry, spice plum, and boysenberry layered with cracked black pepper, purple flowers, and warm earth. In the mouth, this wine is packed with berries and exotic fruits that simply make your head swim! There is plenty of tannin but it is ripe and utterly glassy in texture and the time in oak has polished this gem into one sexy and supple red that just surges with juicy energy and tremendous depth. The finish is crazy long and we all thought this wine was simply sensational!!! This wine is just perfect for braised and grilled meats so if you have a hankering for lamb, then this red will be perfect. The glassy texture and the core of juicy red berries make this also perfect for cheeses and don't forget the mushrooms guys!
