Super Second Bordeaux Wines

The term "Super-Second Bordeaux" refers to wines considered to be of exceptional quality but are ranked outside of the First Growth classification, often rivaling the First Growths in terms of taste, complexity, and aging potential.

In the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, wineries were ranked into different "growths" based on their perceived quality and market price at that time. But that was almost 170 years ago and many lower-ranking wines have garnered accolades to put them at or near the top of the Classification.

Super-Second Bordeaux wines are known for outperforming their classification. They are produced by châteaux who have consistently demonstrated superior winemaking skills and have gained a reputation for excellence. Although priced lower than First Growths, Super-Second Bordeaux wines often command high prices due to their caliber and demand in the market.

Like First Growths, these wines have great aging potential and can develop complex flavors over decades. Most of these châteaux are located in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, particularly in appellations like Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe. Overall, the term "Super Second Bordeaux" is an informal classification used by wine enthusiasts, critics, and collectors to denote Second Growth Bordeaux wines that are considered to be a worthy of comparison to First Growths.
