Morey Coffinet: Precision in Chassagne-Montrachet

Domaine Morey-Coffinet: Precision in Chassagne-Montrachet

Domaine Morey-Coffinet is a distinguished family-run estate located in Chassagne-Montrachet, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Established in 1980 through the union of Michel Morey and Fabienne Coffinet, the domaine merges the legacies of two esteemed winemaking families: the Moreys and the Coffinets. Today, under the stewardship of their son, Thibault Morey, the estate spans approximately nine hectares, cultivating both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines.

Heritage and Terroir

The domaine boasts an impressive array of vineyard holdings in some of Burgundy’s most revered appellations. These include Premier Cru sites such as La Romanée, Dent de Chien, and Blanchot-Dessus in Chassagne-Montrachet, as well as the esteemed Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. Their vineyards are characterized by clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the distinctive minerality and complexity of their wines.

Commitment to Sustainable Viticulture

Thibault Morey has been instrumental in transitioning the estate towards sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The vineyards achieved organic certification in 2018, and biodynamic principles have been embraced since 2015. Traditional methods, such as horse plowing and Guyot-Poussard pruning, are employed to maintain soil vitality and vine health. These practices aim to produce grapes that truly express the essence of their terroir.

Winemaking Philosophy

In the cellar, Thibault emphasizes minimal intervention to preserve the purity and vibrancy of the fruit. Grapes undergo gentle pressing with minimal sulfur usage, and fermentation occurs in a combination of larger oak barrels and amphorae. This approach allows the wines to develop complexity while maintaining a clear expression of their origin.

Wine Profile

Domaine Morey-Coffinet produces a range of wines that are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and depth. The white wines, predominantly Chardonnay, exhibit notes of citrus, orchard fruits, and a pronounced minerality. Domaine Morey-Coffinet continues to garner acclaim for its dedication to quality and its respectful approach to both viticulture and winemaking. The estate's wines are a testament to the rich heritage and exceptional terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet.
