Wines From Across the Australian Wine Country at the Meritage Tasting Room
Join us this week at the Meritage Tasting Room for a curated tasting flight featuring some of our favorite wines from across Australia. This three-wine flight highlights selections from the Barossa Valley and Hunter Valley, two of the country’s oldest and most influential wine regions, each offering a distinct expression of place.
The Barossa Valley, settled by European immigrants in the mid-1800s, is known for its warm days, cool nights, and ancient, nutrient-poor soils. These conditions support some of the world’s oldest continuously producing vines and give rise to deeply flavored wines—most famously Shiraz, celebrated for its richness, spice, and power.
In contrast, the Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine region, experiences a warm, humid climate shaped by coastal influence and frequent cloud cover. Sandy alluvial soils and early harvesting traditions result in wines with lower alcohol and vibrant natural acidity, particularly the region’s iconic Semillon, which is renowned for its ability to age gracefully.
This week’s flight features the 2022 Steinborner Marsanne, a historic Steven Vineyard Shiraz from the Hunter Valley, and a Charles Cimicky Red Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. I’m especially excited to share the Marsanne, which offers delicate aromas of pear and citrus peel with hints of almond and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and expressive, showing stone fruit, lemon curd, and savory spice, all lifted by bright acidity and a clean, mineral-driven finish that makes it wonderfully food-friendly.
Visit us Thursday through Saturday from 1:00–5:00 PM to enjoy this week’s flight.
