The 2014 La Rioja Alta Vina Arana Gran Reserva is an incredibly gorgeous, classic Rioja that is muscular and incredibly complex! This wine is loaded with classic black cherry, red currant, broadly ripe, and deeply intense blackberry and blueberry fruits, brambly spice, and beautifully plush textures that are La Rioja Alta's signature. Tobacco, hints of warm earth, leather, and classic orange rind notes play off a core of fruit that make Rioja one of the top regions in the world for collectible reds! Muscular enough to age for decades yet polished, pure, and succulent now, this wine is simply superb textbook Gran Reserva Rioja.

La Rioja Alta is a historic winery located in the heart of Rioja. Founded in 1890 by five Spanish wine-producing families who called the venture Sociedad Vinicola de la Rioja Alta. With French vineyards devastated by phylloxera, many French winemakers looked to Spain and to Rioja's unaffected vineyards to build a new legacy. So began the rise of Rioja in the world of wine and La Rioja Alta has been at the forefront ever since. In the pantheon of truly historic and traditional Spanish wineries, La Rioja Alta stands arm in arm with the very top wineries and we think their wines are nothing short of stunning!

James Suckling: 96 Points

Lots of mushroom and walnut aromas with plum and leather too. It's full-bodied but very soft and creamy-textured with lots of old wood, mushroom and ripe fruit on the finish. Some chocolate and hazelnut. Complex and gorgeous. Drink or hold.

Vinous: 93 Points

Limpid ruby-red. Oak-spiced cherry, black raspberry, candied rose, spicecake and coconut aromas show a very good definition and pick up notes as the wine opens up. Smooth and appealingly sweet, offering sappy cherry cola, fruitcake, coconut and floral pastille flavors complemented by an earthy undertone. Shows very good energy and floral likft on a long, smoky finish framed by velvety, well-knit tannins.
