Brunello di Montalcino: the King of Sangiovese! Seductive, powerful wines from Tuscany's main grape can often carry a similar punch in price. The Fanti wines simply over-deliver at every level of production. Their Rosso di Montalcino is an everyday value and their normal Brunello is a steal. This Vallocchio, their top-tier offering, has the stuffing to cellar for a decade!

Vallocchio isn't a single vineyard site, but a combination of the five oldest vineyards on the Fanti property in the heart of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where Montalcino's most historic vines are planted. This bottling is so special to the Fanti family that they only make it in excellent years, and 2017 was a banner year in Brunello. Bold and succulent, with sun-dried tomatoes, black cherry, and fresh tobacco, there's a muscular tannic grip that begs for a vigorous decant but is a sure sign that this wine will develop gracefully in the cellar!

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio shows a robust fruit profile and powerful 15% alcohol. The wine reflects the warmth and heat of the vintage, but a deft hand in the cellar assures balance and elegance in winemaking. The bouquet reveals dark cherry, rum cake, balsam herb and tarry smoke. There's no mistaking that hot-vintage signature and the more exuberant and boisterous personality displayed here. The cellar folks should be proud of their efforts in this 5,000-bottle release.

James Suckling: 93 Points

This shows relatively fine-textured tannins that are plush at the same time, together with berry, cherry and light hazelnut character that touches both the nose and palate nicely. It’s creamy and polished with a caressing finish. A couple years will bring it together. Excellent balance and freshness for the vintage. Drink after 2023.

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

This red cuts a broad swath with cherry, strawberry, iron and savory herb flavors. Dense yet lively and harmonious, with a long, mineral- and spice-infused aftertaste. Best from 2025.
